PureVPN Review

Introduction

VPN that stands for Virtual Private Network, is a facility to extend a private network across a public network to allow users to send and receive data across public platforms posing as if their computers were connected to a private network. A VPN gives you privacy and anonymity by creating a private network on a public network connection. It conceals your internet protocol address (IP Address) so that you are virtually invisible online. Usually, VPN is required to establish a secure and encrypted connection when connected on public network. It provides you privacy better than a secure Wi-Fi hotspot. Therefore, we have created PureVPN review articles.

A brief overview of PureVPN Review

Founded in 2006, PureVPN is one of the oldest and most reliable VPN services in the market. Headquartered in Hong Kong, they have managed to steer clear from the prying surveillance alliances like Five Eyes, Nine Eyes, and Fourteen Eyes. Therefore, your data is much secure with PureVPN as there are remote chances of this company handing over users’ data to alliances mentioned above. Plus, Hong Kong government’s anti-privacy laws make PureVPN even more secure and private.

More than a decade after its launch, PureVPN now has more than 2,000 servers in over 140 countries across the globe. Having such a large number of servers spread across the length and breadth of the globe ensures high speed of your internet since it depends partially on the distance between your device and the server. This has further strengthened the brand image of PureVPN in the trade and has drawn millions of customers to its platform.

  1. PureVPN  Key Differentiating Features

PureVPN creates a Virtual Private Network *VPN) when you connect your device to the internet on a public WiFI hotspot, your home connection or even cellular network. VPN is necessary when you are connected on a public network. PureVPN masks your IP and establishes a secure connection that is untraceable and offers better privacy.

To know more about PureVPN as the benefits it offers, follow the key features given below.

  1. Data Logging

This the most important feature to consider while choosing a VPN service. Data logging policies matter more than any other benefits it has to offer. Every VPN service log some personal data but in 2018, PureVPN changed their privacy policy to become a true no-data-logging VPN. A couple of years ago, PureVPN helped FBI to track a person based on his usage of the VPN service. The company received flak because of breach of data privacy policy. Soon after this, the company changed their data logging policy and even hired an independent security firm.

  1. Internet Kill Switch

An Internet kill switch is a network lock feature that kills your internet in case the VPN goes down to maintain your privacy. If you don’t want your IP to be revealed at all, this feature comes in handy. Without the Internet Kill Switch, even a momentary outage in the VPN can expose the IP address your device to your ISP and the websites you log on. PureVPN has an Internet Kill Switch for Windows, Mac, Android and Linux.

  1. Split Tunneling

It is an important feature that allows you to designate specific internet traffic to get encrypted by the VPN. Without this feature, your VPN would be either on or off. PureVPN provides you this feature so that you decide what type of internet traffic can get encrypted. It offers Split Tunneling

  1. Netflix Streaming

With PureVPN, you can also connect to another country’s Netflix or you can connect to your home country when you are away. This way you can get access to that particular country’s content on Netflix without having to be there in real time. There are many VPNs that don’t work with Netflix because the streaming service detects a VPN and blocks it. PureVPN can bypass these detection systems and you can watch Netflix of different country.

  1. P2P File Sharing

With the help of PureVPN’s P2P file sharing feature, you can easily download torrent files. Just make sure you are connected to one of their special servers that they use for Peer-to-Peer file transfers. However, in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom or Australia, PureVPN doesn’t have P2P servers. Thus, you can experience slow torrent downloading speed since you will be using a server that is nearest possible to you.

  1. Encryption

Encryption is an important parameter to consider while purchasing a VPN service. Since VPN’s primary purpose is to provide security and privacy, encryption plays an important role. If you want to protect your privacy on the internet, then you must never look the encryption protocol your VPN service follows. PureVPN, in this case, uses AES-256 for data encryption. For the uninitiated, AES-256 is the most advanced encryption protocol available.  The United States uses AES-256 to encrypt highly-classified data and information. This is the reason why it is also known as ‘military-grade encryption’.

  1. Protocols

It is very important to consider what all protocols a VPN service is using since it is a parameter that decides its degree of security. PureVPN uses OpenVPN/IKEv2 on Windows, OpenVPN on MacOS and Android and IPSec/IKEv2 on iOS. These protocols are very secure as cited by the infosec community. If you are the one who value security more than speed, then PureVPN also gives an option to pick among PPTP protocol and No-Encryption.

To know more in detail about the features of these protocols, keep reading below.

  • IKEv2/IPSec

IKEv2 stands for Internet Key Exchange Version 2 and it is a popularly used VPN protocol that automatically reconnects you with your VPN even after you have disconnected from the internet. This feature is advantageous when you often switch between WiFi and mobile data, which is a common practice among people these days. IPSec or Internet Protocal Security is an array of internet protocols to send data over an internet connection securely.

  • OpenVPN

OpenVPN is an open source VPN protocol that facilitates secure tunnels for your web traffic. It is considered to be of gold standard partly because it offers a good mixture of speed and security. It offers AES 256-bit encryption using the Open SSL library. With protocols like PPTP, L2TP, IKEv2/IPSec, SSTP, etc, OpenVPN can offer many features as per users’ requirements.

  • LT2P/IPSec

L2TP stands for Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol that works with IPSec to produce a highly secure VPN client. L2TP creates VPN tunnel and IPSec takes care of the encryption, channel security and data integrity checks. L2TP/IPSec is slower than IKEv2 and OpenVPN. However, it is still a convenient option available.

  • PPTP

Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) is the security protocol that has been in service since the 1990s. It creates tunnels to encapsulate the data packet while a secondary protocol like GRE or TCP encrypts the data. It is considered outdated and not one of the securest protocol in the market.

  1. Detailed description of {VPN BRAND} on all the above parameters

(with usage of graphs, tables, images to bring clarity)

  1. Speed

PureVPN may not be the fasted VPN services available in the market, but it is decent enough to browse through internet securely, download torrent and play games. We connected on both our nearest servers as well US servers and didn’t experience any significant decrease in the internet speed. We conducted the speed test using the Speed Test by Ookla to check the download and upload speed of our internet using the PureVPN. It reduced our internet speed by __ per cent. Given the results, we won’t say that PureVPN is the fasted VPN service but it is a decent pick.

  1. Servers and their locations

With more than 2,000 servers across 140 countries, PureVPN can help you connect to tunnels through the internet on 6 to 7 continents. Via PureVPN you can connect up to 10 devices at the same time and can be used on Windows, Mac OS, Android and iOS through app or Chrome or Firefox Extensions. PureVPN also has specialized servers for some popular websites like Netflix. If you want to unblock a specific website, you can search for it on the server-selection page and can retrieve the servers that can allow you access.

  1. Streaming

Does PureVPN work with Netflix?

We tried streaming High Definition videos on Netflix and since Netflix US is the most coveted platform known for diverse options, we access Netflix US by connecting to the US servers. Although the connection was a bit slower than our usual, we were able to stream Netflix US on our devices. Apart from that, PureVPN also allows you access to Hulu, HBO GO, BBC iPlayer, etc in high definition.

  1. Torrenting

PureVPN supports Peer to Peer file sharing. There is a dedicated torrenting profile on the application and separate servers to ensure that the P2P connection is fast and secure. Since copyright infringement lawsuits are getting stringent, many VPN providers are now dodging the P2P servers. PureVPN is among the fewer ones now offering torrent-friendly service. It doesn’t have any restrictions on torrenting.

  1. Gaming

To check PureVPN’s performance while gaming, we used the speedtest application on a popular online multiplayer game. The results while gaming were a bit underwhelming as compared to other VPN providers. The average response for the game was ____ without VPN and ____ with VPN. The game didn’t suffer any stutter or lag as such. Thus, PureVPN is a decent pick for gaming as well.

  1. Security & Privacy

How secure is PureVPN?

When you’re working on a Public Wi-Fi or wish to bypass censorship laws in your country, personal security is the most important aspect to consider. When checked on IPLeak, Perfect Privacy, Browser Leaks, IPX and Virtual Total, there were no leaks found. To safeguard users from the brute force attacks, PureVPN uses 256-bit Encryption protocol. It is the best form of defense to prevent such cyberattacks. It is also used by the US government and other agencies around the world. Their end-to-end connection also protects your privacy and anonymity on the internet. Additionally, PureVPN supports all major protocols including OpenVPN, L2TP/IPSec, PPTP, SSTP and even IKEv2.

  1. Compatible Platforms , Devices & Extensions

How good {VPN BRAND}’s compatibility?

  • Does it have browser extension?

PureVPN has browser extensions for Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox that are easy to install and use. In case you’re using a lower configuration PC, we would recommend you to use PureVPN browser extensions instead

  • Does it have software for Windows and Mac?

Yes. PureVPN has software for both Windows and Mac operating system, along with an Android and iOS app. However, in case of Mac, the application is not available on the official app store. You can PureVPN download it from the website. The layout of software for both Windows and Mac are almost similar.

  • Can it secure routers?

PureVPN also offers dedicated software for routers as well as streaming devices like Amazon Fire Stick and Kodi-powered systems. You can run VPN on your routers as well in order to extend protection to each and every device in your house that can give away your IP address and serve as a doorway for hackers and cybercriminals. PureVPN has recently added a new feature called Virtual Router which allows you to make your Windows desktop or laptop as a router and connects up to 10 different devices.

  • Can it secure gaming consoles and smart TV?

PureVPN allows you to connect 5 devices simultaneously. They also provide application for all devices including Smart TVs and gaming consoles to enjoy complete internet freedom, privacy and security.

  1. User experience (what is the exp of user in setup, connection and other usages etc.)

PureVPN has a user-friendly experience. It is easy to install apart from some tiny glitches while trying to run the application on my Windows device. As compared to many other VPN brands, PureVPN gives you a pleasant user experience including the number of features and flexibility it offers. For the starters, they give you an Internet Kill Switch, Split Tunneling, Supports Major Protocols, DDoS Protection, Port Forwarding and NAT Firewall. However, while trying to explore all these features, there are some hiccups in the application that leave something to be desired. Some functionality issues on the platform need to be worked out.

Talking about the performance of PureVPN, it was satisfactory and mostly reliable. We played games connecting the VPN to US servers without any major issues. We also streamed high definition content using the same server on Netflix and didn’t experience any buffering. The videos took a bit longer initially to start up but then you can simply try to connect to a different or nearest server.

In terms of downloading speed, PureVPN lags a little behind its contemporaries. However, this is totally dependent on various factors like distance of your location from the VPN location, your internet connection, time of the day, etc.

Additionally, if you are using a PC or laptop with lower system configuration, the app might give you a tough time setting up a VPN.

  1. Censorship (Whether restricted in China or any other country)

While many VPN providers don’t offer services in countries like Russia and China due to their stringent laws, PureVPN does. It offers servers in Russia, China and Turkey as well. This is very notable since the mentioned countries have very oppressive internet laws.

  1. Support (customer service)

A good customer support is another aspect to consider while picking up a VPN service. You would want your questions and concerns to be answered quickly and efficiently through a hassle-free customer support department. PureVPN’s customer support is not the best in trade but it’s not that worse. It offers live chat functionality and most of their responses are auto-generated. Recently, after the feedback from their customers, they introduced quick live chat system that addresses the issues of customers within a minute. Overall, PureVPN customer support is decent and does the job well.

  1. Target customers – B2C and B2B customers
  • Whether {VPN BRAND} is suitable for B2C customer or B2B customer or both?

PureVPN is suitable for all types of customers including small business, medium business, large business and freelancers. The features offered by PureVPN suits diverse requirements of every individual or enterprise. Businesses, specifically, can enjoy secure remote access and global connectivity without investing in hardware and infrastructure.

  • Are there any differences in service offerings for B2C/B2B customers (in terms of features, pricing etc.).

In case of Enterprise version of PureVPN, the company doesn’t offer free trials. However, it offers a number of features like Administrative Control to manage team members, access to company’s network and files to team members, access non public server, access VoIP services like VoIP Connect, Skype and WhatsApp.

  1. Pricing

The first and foremost noticeable feature about PureVPN is its price plans. It is one of the cheapest VPN providers you will see in the market. With their 1-year plan, they offer huge savings as compared to the monthly plans. Here’s how their price plans look like.

PureVPN Pricing

The best part is that PureVPN gives you a 7-day trial period during which you can cancel the subscription any time without any cancellation fees. You can explore all the features of PureVPN during the trial period itself to get a hang of this VPN service. After a 7-day trial period, you can subscribe to these 3 plans:

  • 1 Month: $10.95 per month (0% savings)
  • 6 Months: $8.33 per month (24% savings)
  • 12 months: $6.49 per month (40% savings)

You can make the payment with almost every payment method available in the world right now. They also have an option to pay for the subscription using crypto currencies. This is a huge plus point for those who want to subscribe for a VPN plan but want to remain untraceable. Apart from their budget-friendly plan, they also offer a 31-day money back guarantee.

If you want to try and explore PureVPN features first, go for the 7 day trial plan and if you find it suitable for your needs, we would recommend you to subscribe to the annual plan straightaway. It offers huge savings and saves you from the hassles of making payments every month.

For enterprise use, PureVPN offers plans as given below.

For the B2B customers, the plans vary depending on the number of employees in an enterprise. The minimum employees are 5 while it can go up to infinite numbers for the maximum limit.

For a business of 30 employees, PureVPN price plans are as follows:

  • VPN for Teams: $7.61 per user/month.  (10% savings)
  • Dedicated IP VPN for Teams: $9.19 per user/month (8% savings)
  • Dedicated VPN Server for Teams: $399 per month
  1. Editor’s Rating – Here, we will rate it from 5 stars

With a good user interface and easy to install setup, PureVPN has a lot to offer. However, it is not the fastest VPN service on the block. Also, the Windows application is a bit on the heavier side for a system with lower configuration. My system froze for some time after installing the app. It resumed functioning normally after the uninstallation. If PureVPN tweaks a little bit here and there and improve its customer support service, it would become the front-runner among the VPN services in the future. Overall, given at this price range PureVPN is a decent performer with few improvements required. We would like to rate it 3.5 out of 5 for its security, features, price plan, privacy and user experience.

Overall Rating: 3.5/5

  1. Final thoughts
  • Should you buy PureVPN?

The features of PureVPN are good enough to make you buy a subscription. However, the app usability and the speed are not that impressive. It is a fair and decent VPN service provider but it would be overstatement to say that it is the fastest. Therefore, if you want to buy a VPN service that is not too heavy on your pocket but provides you a decent internet speed, privacy, security and access to Netflix from different countries’ servers, then PureVPN is worth a pick. Also, check the NordVPN Review.

  • Conclusion

PureVPN gives you top notch security and privacy without any leaks. It surely has loads of features like split tunneling, internet kill switch, etc. All these features surely add enough value to the VPN service among its competitors. It may not be the best VPN service on the block, but it definitely one among the most affordable ones. However, we would suggest that PureVPN should work on its app usability and customer support. All these loopholes prevent PureVPN from becoming a game-changer in the VPN market.
